EBSU SUG Impeachment: Senate President Explains Why Chika Nwuhuo Was Removed

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE IMPEACHMENT OF THE EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT, EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY

My dear Ebonyi State University students,
Yesterday, June 13, 2026, the Senate of the 27th Assembly of the Students' Union Government exercised its constitutional responsibility by impeaching the Executive President of the Students' Union Government, Comrade Chika Abraham Nwuhuo.
I understand that this decision has generated reactions and discussions across the university community. As your Senate President, I consider it important to explain why the Senate took this action and why we believe it was necessary in the interest of Ebonyi State University students.
First and foremost, this impeachment was not motivated by personal differences, political rivalry, or any desire to witch-hunt anyone. It was the outcome of months of observations, complaints, petitions, consultations, and deliberations regarding the state of the Students' Union Government and the performance of the administration.
Let me make it clear that this matter did not begin yesterday. Several petitions were submitted against the Executive President by stakeholders within the Students' Union Government. In response to these petitions and other concerns, the Senate invited the President on multiple occasions to appear before the legislative arm and address issues relating to his administration.
Unfortunately, he repeatedly failed to honour these invitations and refused to appear before the Senate. This was not the first invitation extended to him. Time and again, opportunities were provided for engagement, clarification, and accountability, yet those opportunities were ignored.
It is also important to state that the Senate's decision was not based on the fact that student leaders were not receiving money, as some people may choose to believe. The issue goes far beyond that. The reality is that after almost eight months in office, there is little that students can point to as a significant achievement of this administration.
The Students' Union Government exists to advocate for students, engage management, defend students' interests, and improve student welfare. Yet throughout this administration, students have continued to face numerous challenges without the level of representation and advocacy expected from their elected leadership.
Issues relating to NELFUND, the cancellation of the Medical Students' Mock Examination, and several other student concerns demanded strong intervention and advocacy from the Students' Union Government. Unfortunately, the administration failed to rise to these responsibilities.
Many students have genuine concerns affecting their welfare, academics, and campus experience. However, rather than witnessing active advocacy and purposeful leadership, students have largely been presented with publicity materials, photographs, and monthly flyers that create the appearance of activity without corresponding results on the ground.
The truth is that leadership is not measured by posters, social media updates, or photographs. Leadership is measured by impact, representation, advocacy, accountability, and service to the people.
The Senate was also deeply concerned by the administration's handling of the Union's finances and budgetary processes. The budget prepared for the Union was not subjected to the complete legislative process required by the Constitution. Instead, the budget remained inaccessible to the legislative arm, preventing the Senate from carrying out its constitutional oversight functions.
As a consequence, no member of the 27th Republic or the 27th Assembly had access to funds necessary for the discharge of official responsibilities. Student leaders elected to serve the students were left unable to effectively perform their duties because resources meant for the operation of the Union were not made available through proper constitutional procedures.
Several documents and initiatives intended to facilitate the smooth functioning of the Students' Union Government were also reportedly withheld from approval, creating unnecessary obstacles to governance and administration.
For over eight months, no SUG official received any form of welfare or remuneration from the administration. While student leaders continued to make sacrifices in service to the Union, there was little evidence of concern for their welfare or the effective functioning of government.
The Senate further observed a pattern of poor consultation and inadequate collaboration with other arms of government. Important decisions were reportedly taken without sufficient deliberation, while the principles of collective leadership and institutional accountability were repeatedly undermined.
Another matter that concerned the Senate was the administration's failure to establish proper institutional engagement with the university management. Since assuming office, the administration never led an official courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, a basic engagement expected of a functioning Students' Union Government.
It was also reported that funds were collected from members of the executive council for the purpose of facilitating such engagements, yet no courtesy visit was conducted and no satisfactory explanation was provided regarding the funds collected.
The Senate therefore concluded that the administration had failed to meet the expectations of leadership entrusted to it by the students of Ebonyi State University.
This impeachment was not an act of hostility. It was a constitutional response to persistent failures in governance, accountability, transparency, representation, and leadership.
As Senate President, I want every student to know that the Senate acted carefully, responsibly, and within the powers granted to it by the Constitution. We did not act in haste, and we did not act out of personal interest. We acted because the interests of students must always come first.
Students deserve a Union that speaks when they are facing challenges. Students deserve leaders who engage management, advocate for their welfare, protect their interests, and remain accountable to the people who elected them.
The Senate remains committed to restoring transparency, accountability, effective governance, and purposeful leadership within the Students' Union Government.
We assure all students that every action taken by the Senate will continue to be guided by our constitutional responsibility and our commitment to protecting the interests of the student body.
